Sunday afternoon Kaohsiung American School (KAS), as one of southern Taiwan’s leading international institutions, offered the ideal venue and clear pathways for the CAT College Fair, welcoming official representatives from over 120 prestigious universities worldwide. Inside, vibrant banners and campus flyers created an exciting, yet undeniably overwhelming, maze of information. For our Grade 11 and Grade 12 students who traveled down from Yilan, stepping into this global forum brought both high expectations and natural questions about where to begin. Rather than passively walking the floor, United Education International School (UEIS) high school students arrived with clear purpose alongside their academic directors and college counselors.
A few hit the ground running, using the event map they had studied early to mark their ideal routes. For those lingering by the entryway and unsure of how to break the ice, our teachers pulled up chairs right beside them. Instead of simply handing out answers, they helped each student reflect on their personal interests and strengths, narrow down their top three priority schools, and craft targeted questions focused on admission criteria and specialized academic programs.
In international college counseling, the quality of a student’s questions often makes all the difference in uncovering key opportunities. The moment the doors opened, our guided students moved straight to the front, weaving through the booths with notebooks in hand to engage university admissions officers in fluent, confident English. When a student turned to ask, “Are there other schools here that really fit what I want to do?”. our faculty gave precise recommendations on the spot. That kind of immediate, personalized insight comes straight from the daily rhythm of our American-style boarding school and its close 1:4 student-faculty ratio. Because our teachers live and work alongside their students year-round, they know each teenager’s personality, academic strengths, and passions inside out, which allow them to tailor advice and point students in the right direction without hesitation.
As the afternoon went on, our faculty found themselves stepping back. The greatest reward in education is watching that hesitation disappear: seeing students who needed an initial nudge find their footing, speak with genuine confidence, and even strike out on their own toward booths they hadn’t initially planned to visit. Grounded in an authentic American educational model, UEIS breaks away from rigid tracks through our personalized, individual schedule system, weaving holistic mentorship into daily school life. College counseling isn't treated as a rushed, last-minute application scramble in senior year; it is an ongoing journey where students feel deeply supported and gradually build the self-assurance to take ownership of their own futures.
Leaving the energy of the KAS campus behind, our students headed home with folders full of new university materials, and more importantly a personalized roadmap they charted with their own hands. Set against the peaceful landscapes of Yilan, UEIS remains dedicated to close faculty mentorship and deep personal trust, nurturing each student’s unique talents. When we hand young learners the compass to explore their own path, they step forward onto the world stage with steady poise, genuine resilience, and quiet confidence.
