From Yilan to the World: Practicing SDG Values at the Green Expo

Last week, the faculty and students of United Education International School (UEIS) headed to Wulaokeng in Su'ao, Yilan, to participate in the annual Yilan Green Expo. This event was far more than a simple field trip. It was a sophisticated educational practice that deeply integrated the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with Task-Based Learning (TBL). As a UEIS counselor, I believe such activities precisely capture the essence of international education, which seamlessly linking academic proficiency with a sense of global responsibility, and allowing students to construct their understanding of the world within an authentic setting.

Traditional education often treats "environmental protection" as an abstract theory found in textbooks. At UEIS, however, we firmly believe that Experience is the ultimate path to expertise. With its rich river and forest ecosystems, Wulaokeng serves as a natural laboratory for practicing SDG 15 (Life on Land) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Based on my field observations, UEIS does not view the Green Expo as a mere playground; instead, it is positioned as a "classroom." Students are not passive tourists but curious researchers. By observing plant life and habitat restoration to understand complex ecological chains, they gain a far more profound impact than they would by simply memorizing terminology in a biology class, fostering a genuine emotional connection to the land.

Within the UEIS educational framework, English is a tool, not the destination. The success of this event hinged on the deep involvement of our international faculty, who transformed the exhibition content into a cross-cultural academic adventure. During the process, teachers frequently guiding students through observation and dialogue to complete their academic task sheets.

The advantage of this pedagogical model is that students no longer study English merely for exams; they use English as a medium for critical thinking to understand real-world issues such as biodiversity and climate change. I observed that when foreign teachers posed open-ended questions regarding resource recycling on-site, students demonstrated not only language proficiency but also the capacity for logical reasoning and immediate feedback. This type of communication practice in an informal environment often builds oral confidence more effectively than traditional classroom exercises.

In the hands-on experience and interactive game zones of the Green Expo, I witnessed the growth of "non-cognitive skills"—the most critical component of holistic education. When students created eco-friendly items from recycled materials, it was more than just a craft class; it was a practical exercise in resource allocation.

According to my observation logs, when faced with limited materials and time, students had to quickly manage group division of labor, negotiation, and resource sharing. This ability to solve problems in an uncertain environment is a prerequisite for future international leaders. Researches of outdoor education by the American Institutes for Research (AIR) shows that students participating in these hands-on programs see an average improvement of approximately 27% in problem-solving skills and scientific literacy. The sense of achievement gained from "learning by doing" transforms into powerful motivation, ensuring that environmental knowledge is not just dogma, but a life experience etched into their minds.

UEIS has always been committed to nurturing elites with a "global vision," and this vision must be rooted in care for the land and environment. This journey did more than just fulfill syllabus requirements; it planted the seeds of sustainable development in our students' hearts.

We believe that as our students' footprints extend from Yilan to the rest of the world, they will carry with them not only a wealth of academic knowledge but also the responsibility and confidence of being a Global Citizen. Through this transdisciplinary approach combining nature, science, and language, UEIS is redefining the heights of international education and equipping the next generation with the strength to face future challenges.
