From Learning to Serving: Empowering Youth with English
United Education International School (UEIS), well known in Yilan for its strong track record in international college admissions, demonstrated its commitment to holistic education on September 9 with the launch of the 16-week "UEIS × SDGs Zhuangwei English Mentorship Program." Initiated directly by UEIS students, this project breaks away from conventional college prep and service-learning models. By partnering with the local Fuqi Family Charity Association and several elementary and junior high schools in Zhuangwei—and supported by professional foreign faculty mentors—the initiative establishes a sustainable educational model driven by students, backed by teachers, and co-created with the local community.
Traditional student volunteer service in Taiwan often turns into a passive exercise of tracking required hours on adult-driven schedules. UEIS has completely reimagined this structure, putting high school students on the front lines of leadership and community action. Participating students must assess local learners' real-world needs, develop adaptive lesson plans, and complete 12 hours of specialized training with direct classroom observation and feedback from foreign mentors. Moving beyond basic timekeeping, the program evaluates lesson quality, communication skills, child ethics, and reflective teamwork through a three-tier mentorship certification system (Bronze, Silver, and Gold), ensuring high standards and long-term continuity.
Inside classrooms, teaching strategies are customized by grade level. Elementary students build natural speaking confidence through interactive phonics games and contextual storybook reading. Middle school students advance into structured reading strategies, conversation scenarios, and short thematic presentations. Supporting the entire operation, the Fuqi Family Charity Association coordinates essential logistics, including reliable transportation, creating a safe and consistent learning environment that directly advances UN Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
The launch ceremony brought together key community, educational, and philanthropic leaders in a shared commitment to educational equity. Distinguished attendees included Fuqi Family Charity Association Chair Yeh Tzu-lan, President Kuang Chun-hung, and CEO Huang Szu-fu; regional education directors Huang Chih-sheng and Chuang Hsiu-chuan; alongside principals Tsai Yu-jung (Zhuangwei Junior High), Liu Chien-cheng (Zhuangwei Elementary), Wu Wen-cheng, Chen Yu-ching, Chen Po-ju, and Kuo Yu-fang.
Speaking at the event, Principal Liu Chien-cheng emphasized that the dedication of UEIS mentors provides Zhuangwei children with top-tier English resources on par with major metropolitan schools. Principal Tsai Yu-jung framed the initiative around shared community growth, noting that joining forces with an international school broadens local students' global perspectives. Association Chair Yeh Tzu-lan added that their mission is rooted in genuine care, aiming to eliminate language barriers so that rural children can speak English with confidence.
UEIS Executive Director Peggy Wu highlighted that the school's mission reaches well beyond helping students gain admission to top global universities—it centers on shaping empathetic global citizens. Expressing gratitude to Fuqi Family and participating school leaders, she observed that when students take ownership of local challenges, English stops being just a test subject and becomes a real tool for leadership, service, and positive social change.
The program will culminate in an "English Showcase" in January 2027. Elementary participants will present story performances, junior high students will deliver three-minute thematic English presentations, and UEIS mentors will share their curriculum designs and reflections on community impact, celebrating a successful union of local action and global learning.
